Hand Carved Gemstones

Jaipur has been renowned for the craft of gemstone carving since its inception in 1727. When Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II founded the city, he invited jewelers and lapidaries to settle in the city. The royal craft of gemstone carving itself is heavily influenced by the Mughals and Persians. Artisans would craft intricate motifs such as the “buta” also known as paisley, florals, and lattice patterns into precious stones. They also formed them into daggers, cups, and more.

The transformation of a gemstone into a carving or sculpture requires significant concentration, effort, and patience. It takes hours of meticulous hand work to make each piece. I’ve always been fascinated with gemstones, and I’ve long studied Mughal arts and craft. It was an absolute dream to work with such incredibly talented craftspeople to make these beautiful pieces.

While the hand carved gemstone pendants make such a statement, the Pietra Necklace is made of hand carved Aquamarine and Morganite stones each hand carved in the shape of a melon and then hand knotted. It’s striking, especially up close.
